Bill Pendergraft, President
Bill Pendergraft decided to create Environmental Media while attending the American Demographics Conference in NYC in 1988. He was then living between Toronto and Chapel Hill, managing US Marketing for TVOntario. Twenty years before, combing through the wrack zone on Ocracoke Island, NC, he decided there must be a way to get paid for wandering around natural areas.
Combining his passions for education, the environment, and media, he was lucky enough to find a collection of equally engaged and engaging people who shared his vision and passion. The sum total of his effort is an infinitesimal little blip of work in the larger scheme of things, but he lives by a salt marsh with a wonderful woman, and enjoys the love of two amazing children, three dogs and a cat. It’s not enough for the world, but it’s enough for him.

Katy Garland, Director of Science Education
Katy Garland serves as the Director of Science Education, and the coordinator of goofing-off in the field at Environmental Media. Common to Water Bearer’s (that’s Aquarius to you non-scientists), her favorite color is blue, her favorite sports are crew, kayaking, and swimming, and she loves the ocean.
Katy has avoided “REAL” work in the past on jobs involving sea turtle research and conservation, coral reef monitoring, and environmental education. These various tree-hugging or turtle-hugging activities have taken Katy to Florida, Costa Rica, Baja California Sur, the Virgin Islands, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Hailing from the metropolis of Peoria, Illinois on the lovely Illinois River, her new line of work has earned her the nickname “Scutes” (a term referring to the scales on a sea turtle).
When Katy is not fooling around at EMC, she is working on her M.A. in Environmental Leadership at Thierry Graduate School (Belgium) or playing with her dog, Lucy.
Contact Katy at 800.368.3382 (ext. 12) or kgarland@envmedia.com.
Ida Phillips Lynch, Writer/Editor
Operating out of Environmental Media’s satellite office in Chatham County, North Carolina, Ida spends way too much time by herself. As the company’s lead writer, Ida spends an inordinate amount of time staring at a blank computer screen while daydreaming about hiking, paddling, bodysurfing, and playing Ms. Pac Man.
During feverish caffeinated episodes, Ida served as principal researcher/writer for Environmental Media’s Rain Forest Trek, North American Biomes, American Grasslands, and American Deserts among other programs. She is the author of North Carolina Afield, a guide to Nature Conservancy projects in North Carolina. Ida once had a real job as the director of communications for The Nature Conservancy, NC Chapter. She is fortunate to live with her husband Merrill and stepson Wesley, who laugh at her dumb jokes and love her famous Hopping John.

Ken Hawkins, Web Designer
How to reach usKen Hawkins designs and manages the EMC website and is a graduate of Clemson University's graphic communication program. In stark contrast to his love of organizing dense information, he also loves to explore chaotically laid out historic districts.
He is drawn to landscape photography – and has lately been enjoying Earth From Above: 366 Days – as a way of enjoying aerial views on the cheap. Although drawn to kayaking, as of late, he has found himself experimenting with falling off of surfboards.
